Akaroa is a beautiful town on the Banks Peninsula. Cruise ships are diverting here since the Christchurch earthquake. Because Akaroa is so far from Christchurch and the damage in Christchurch was so extensive, most excursions do not go there at the presnt time.
Cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender to the wharf. Just wandering around Akaroa is a delight. The town is picturesque with lots of flowers and pleasant walks. The Akaroa Museum is small and interesting. There are numerous firms offering both bus and boat excursions.
