Puketi Forest, Kauri tree
|
Cruise ships tender at Waitangi and most offer a free shuttle bus to Paihia. In Waitangi, one of the regions most important historic landmarks is the Treaty House. This is where the treaty between the Maori chiefs and Britain was signed.
Paihia was founded in 1823 and contains a number of historic buildings along with a Shipwreck Museum. A local ferry has regular service between Paihia and Russell across the bay. There are excursions to the Puketi Forest where one can experience a tropical forest and see the remaining kauri trees some of which are thousands of years old.
