Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. Cruise ships will dock at either the Queens Wharf, in downtown Wellington, or the Aotea Quay. Aotea Quay is 1 mile from downtown and cruise lines will arrange for a shuttle to and from the ship.
There are a number of key sights within the city including a cable car ride to the top of the Kelburn district for fine city views. From here you can walk back downtown via the Wellington Botanic Gardens. After this, visit the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
There is also the City of Wellington Museum by the Queens Wharf. Other favorites are the Old Saint Paul's Church that was built using local wood for stone, the Colonial Cottage Museum, and the Antrim House.
